Little Italy
Little Italy is a name, an expression, which has been part of the Mancunian mythology for generations. Many thousands of people have heard the words without ever really knowing what was meant by Little Italy. Was it a place, an area, or a brand name for some kind of produce?
In fact Little Italy was, and is, a place, an area at the heart of Ancoats on the fringe of central Manchester. Ancoats was once the busiest area of Manchester, home to dozens of huge mills which were the birthplaces for much of what Manchester produced during the Industrial Revolution and the first half of this century.
Little Italy was home to the majority of the Italian families which came to Manchester in search of a new life. Work was found in the surrounding mills, and home-grown industries such as ice-cream manufacture, sprang up to provide extra income.
Within this section will be found material about what Little Italy was, and what Little Italy will be again.
Because Little Italy is coming again......
The Future for Little Italy!!
A public open space is planned for the square in front of St. Peters - this was originally planned as an Italian-style piazza, but the plans have changed. A new apartment complex is to be built on the empty site opposite the Victoria Square dwellings. Maybe the patter of little feet will be heard again, once there's a big enough population to support a primary school.
